Description of the book:

Unresolved workplace conflict wastes time, increases stress, and negatively affects business outcomes. But conflict isn’t the problem: Mismanagement is.

Leaders unintentionally mismanage conflict when the fall into patterns of what Chism calls “the Three A’s:” Aggression, avoidance, and appeasing. “These coping mechanisms are ways human beings avoid the emotions that come with conflict, but in the end it’s all avoidance,” says Chism.

The three reasons leaders mismanage conflict is due to the fear of emotions, the lack of skills development or the culture itself.

The key to effectively managing conflict is to expand conflict capacity. Conflict capacity is a combination of three elements: The Inner Game, The Outer game, and The Culture. The inner game is the personal journey of self-awareness, values, and discernment. The inner game also consists of leadership identity, the ability to manage one’s narrative, and emotional integrity.

The outer game includes skills, tools, and communication techniques.

The culture is internal and external structures that inform how leaders lead, and how people work together. When leaders at the top of the organization avoid, the mid-level leaders follow suit.

Resolving conflict requires the ability to initiate, engage in and stay with difficult conversations. Chism offers techniques to increase leadership clarity, identify obstacles, and reduce resistance. In chapter seven Chism offers a blueprint leaders can use to facilitate conversations that uncover the hidden barriers to performance, improves performance and increases accountability.
