Providing leadership for the people who work for us might sound like learning to ride a bicycle: Once all of the parts are working together, we make that bicycle go. We never forget how to ride after that.
But what about those big bumps in the road? Such as a valued worker wanting a day off for a religious observance we haven't heard of before? Or what will we say to the father who asks to work a different shift so he can be home with his children during the afternoons? Do we know how to answer the woman who insists we owe her a promotion into management because none of our other managers are female? Furthermore, do we know the myriad ways the world is changing, and how those changes will affect the workforce of today and tomorrow?
Through societal and cultural shifts, our diversity is growing. Will we appreciate the differences among us, and use them to our advantage? The smartest organizations will. Because to attract and retain a top workforce in today's changing climate, we must know who our employees are and value how they think. This will not only help us manage our workforce effectively, but it will affect our business's bottom line.
